Calcutta Tram

Details: iPhone

Had gone out today with family. Chanced upon a tram on the way. Trams are such an integral part to my image of Calcutta. It conveys a sense of old-world charm, a nudge to the historic past of this city. However, in today’s fast paced world, they seem to have lost their relevance and position of pride. I do not remember the last time I travelled in one.

In my opinion, Calcutta is all about this eternal struggle between the past and the present. It is sad that a city of such historic importance and one that has contributed so much to India in the early part of the 20th century, could be in such shambles today.

  1. I actually did travel in one of them when I visited Calcutta in 2009. It’s one of the city’s experiences! You made me realize that I didn’t post any pictures of my visit there, should go and flip through them some time!

      • Of course! I spent 7 months in India at the time. I worked in Bangalore and I ended my period there with travelling from Calcutta, to Darjeeling via Varanasi and a few places in Rajasthan to Leh, Bombay and Goa… Amazing times!!

  2. Nice! You managed to hit some great places while you were here…Though I will admit, I have never managed to travel to Leh/Ladakh yet. I have heard it’s beautiful…
